Blog #13
For holiday traditions, I helped run the Italian table. At the table, we had many Italian treats including cookies and pastries, which were popular among the students! One student was dressed as "Dominic the Donkey" and another was dressed as "La Befana." These are two characters that are important to the Italian Christmas, as they are equivalent to our Santa Claus and there are several stories about these Italian figures. I think that having holiday traditions is a great way to end the school week before the holidays. Students are able to enlighten students and teach them about different cultures and how they celebrate their holidays. It is a fun event that I believe is highly appreciated by many students at BHS.

I found artist alumni day to be very interesting, since I am going to be going to school next year for art. It is great to hear about the experiences of these former BHS art students. It is a great way to get information on schools that I might be considering, or even just a great way to learn about what school is like for an art student. Architecture is something that interests me, and it was very interesting to hear about Dan Ricardelli's experience of studying architecture at Northeastern University. It was very cool to see what different kinds of projects you work on as an architect major.
I found it very interesting to learn that Nida Suhail has a double major in industrial design and fashion design. I thought that the dress that she made out of non-fabric materials was very cool and goes to show that you have to think "outside of the box" to be an artist. I thought it was interesting to hear about what classes she took at BHS and what led her to want to be a fashion/industrial design major. Indusrtial design is something that I was not too familiar with before she talked to our class, but it seems to be a great major with many options for careers, as every object that we use is designed by and industrial designer.

Blog #12- Website Redo

Original Site The website that I chose to redo is Yale Art's site. It was created on Wikispaces, so many people are able to go onto the website and edit it. Unfortunately, people take advantage of this and change the website for the worse. The first problem that I found was the background. At the time it was a checkerboard pattern of a random picture that was repeated. I thought it looked very distracting and was not very flattering for the website. To change this problem, I made the background a solid blue color. The second problem that I found with the website is that there was no organization; the text boxes and pictures were randomly scattered across the page. To change this problem, I used alignment to organize the boxes in a more appealing way. The third problem that I found is that there was not color scheme. There were many random colors that did not look good together. To fix this problem, I change the website to have a mono-chromatic color scheme. I used the colors blue and white because these are Yale's school colors, and I thought it would be nice to incorporate these colors into the art school's website. |

I created this picture using the SprayCan app. It is a recreation of my senior rock which i spray-painted in the teacher's parking lot. I recreated the exact design (my name going down diagonal, a heart and '12 in the corners). I tried to match the colors as best as I could (purple background, purple and pink writing), although I could not match the colors up exactly. I thought this was a very cool app and very easy to use. I was able to select from a variety of backgrounds to paint on. There were many colors to choose from. You could also change the size of the "spray can" and you could give your painting a dripping effect. One of the best parts about this app is that you are able to share your with with others who have the app. This is a cool way to receive feedback on your work, as well as check out what other people are creating!

I have volunteered several times in my life. I have volunteered in the town of Burlington, working at elementary school carnivals and other such events, along with volunteering at the recreation department and working with special needs adults. The most important event to me that I have participated in is "Relay For Life." This is an overnight walk for cancer. It is a very fun event, and it is going towards a great cause. This event was so important to me because I have personally been effected by cancer, as I have lost many loved ones to it. The ultimate goal is to sure cancer so that no one has to suffer through the terrible disease. Knowing that by participating in this event will help towards raising money towards research is a great feeling. It is awesome to know that I am making a difference.

Do Something is a website geared towards teens that gives many opportunities to help out in your community and make a difference. It gives information about different issues that other teens may face. Topics include a fight for hunger, swabbing your cheek to help save cancer patients, and even athletic scholarships. There is also a poll of the day along with a project of the day.
I think that this is a great website for a good cause. I think that a lot of teens would like to get involved in volunteering and help others in need, but don't know where to start. This website is the perfect place to get started, as it provides so many options of how you can help out and provides you with all the information that you need. It is very enlightening and very useful to anyone who is thinking about further getting involved in an organization.

#8 Favorite Entertainment App
My favorite entertainment application for the iPad is Pandora. It is a music application. You are able to enter in your favorite band or song, and a playlist is created including different songs by the band or artists, and other songs by bands with the same genre. I think this is great because when I choose one band to play, I usually know/enjoy the other songs that are played afterwards. It is also a great way to discover new music of the same genre. When a new song plays, a biography of the band or singer is given, which can be interesting to learn about. You are able to pause the songs, and skip to a new song. I find this application to be very useful because I do not have any music on my iPad. I have to many songs in my iTunes account, and my iPad does not have enough memory to hold all of my music. I find it annoying to make playlists and to have to constanly update my iPad playlists, so having Pandora is a great way to listen to the music I like on my iPad. A wide variety of music is available to listen to.
